Velocity distributions at channel bifurcations
Abstract
Two dimensional velocity distribution were measured in the small scale river bifurcation model constructed at the Hydraulics and River Engineering Laboratory of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), Dhaka. A series of experimental runs have been conducted to measure precisely two dimensional velocity distributions at channel bifurcation using Programmable Electromagnetic Velocity Meter (EMS). The result of the typical velocity distribution in the grid points near the bifurcation are discussed. It appears that the velocity around the nose were more unstable and two dimensional in nature than the other sections of the main and two downstream channels. The magnitude of the secondary velocity were varied from 2% to 20% of the primary velocity magnitude.
