Effects of colloidal chemistry on fine particle deposition within a viscous porous flow
Abstract
Deposition of fine particles within the viscous porous flow is a common environmental hydraulic phenomenon occurring in deep bed filtration for water supply treatment, groundwater flow, wastewater disposal by land infiltration, estuary sedimentation as well as flow of the pore water in sediment. In this study, it has been also found that deposition of the fine particles on the model grain surface in the porous media depends upon the fine particle surface properties such as surface charge signs and magnitudes. There are two cases occurring with respect to the effects of the particle surface properties on the deposition in the viscous porous flow, i.e., favorable for the deposition for which the fine particle surface charge reversal occurs and unfavorable for the deposition. The zeta potential of the fine particles is the master variable to control these cases.
