Abstract

Artificial Upwelling and MIXing (AUMIX) is a new technology for enhancing open ocean mariculture using nutrient-rich deep ocean water (DOW). The researchers at the University of Hawaii have conducted AUMIX research in three phases. The first phase involves the development of a wave-driven artificial upwelling device that cost effectively brings nutrient-rich deep ocean water to the surface. The second phase, as reported by this paper, investigates the formation of a nutrient-rich plume in the ocean surface. The third phase will investigate DOW enhanced marine biology and fishery.
