Abstract

This paper describes and examines the water quality problems caused by a tideovertopping barrage, using the Tawe Barrage in Wales, UK as an example. A three dimensional water movement and water quality model (WQFLO W-3 DSL) of the Tawe Impoundment has been developed and calibrated. It is used to simulate the water quality processes and predict the effectiveness of remedial measures by the regulator (The Environment Agency) and the operator (City and County of Swansea), as a management tool for decision making.
