Abstract

Field experiments in the Pampa region of Argentina, during days with strong winds (pampero) have been carried to investigate aspects of the wind sheltering ability of single-row and double-row field shelterbelts of wheat (Triticale) intercalated in wheat plantations (Buck Charma variety). The purpose of this study by means of hot-wire anemometry was to examine aspects of the fine structure of the turbulence in the best sheltered region of a wheat plantation protected by other intercalated fast growing wheat species and to examine penetration phenomena of the outer large-scale structures into the plantation. The results strengthen the evidence that descending vertical transport processes into the upper part of the highly protected shelterbelt near wake region are more important than horizontal bleed flow transport processes through the shelterbelt. Aspects of a particular bleed flow which can hinder penetration phenomena are described.
