Abstract

The fluctuating response to turbulent wind of a long-span bridge deck, is mainly resonant with little background contribution. Equivalent static wind loads can therefore be derived using a combination of a mean loading, and inertial loadings associated with each significant mode. However the sign and proportion of the contribution from each significant mode should vary depending on the load effect (e.g. bending moment at centre-span, or some other position). Thus several effective static loads may be required — one for each load effect of interest. This paper gives a methodology required to derive these effective static load distributions, and examples from the wind-tunnel test of a full aeroelastic model of a cable-stayed bridge.
