Abstract

The vertical response characteristics of a flat plate cantilever model, which can be thought as a simplified model of a cable stayed bridge under construction, in the wake of a conical hill were experimentally studied. The response was found to be much larger and spikier than in the approaching boundary layer. To clarify to what extent the spiky responses can be explained by the velocity fluctuation, a response analysis based on the measured velocity fluctuation was conducted. By comparing the computed and the simultaneously measured response spikes, it is suggested that the velocity fluctuations that cause the spiky responses are highly correlated along the line skewed approximately 40° from normal to the approaching wind direction. This is also supported by the characteristics of velocity fluctuations sampled conditionally on the basis of the response spikes and is consistent with the model response characteristics which became larger with the same skew angle
