On mechanism of flutter and unified flutter theory of bridges
Abstract
In this paper, an iteration method is developed to get the complex mode of a 2-D flutter system. With the criteria of total mode damping including both structural and aerodynamic dampings less than zero, the process of flutter occurrence can be obtained. Through the analysis on a thin plate and a bluff body, the mechanism of flutter is explained and the intrinsic consistence of the two categories of so-called “stiffness-driven flutter” and “damping driven flutter” is illustrated. The effect of each aerodynamic derivative on flutter instability is further investigated.
