Finite element modelling of flow around bridges
Abstract
A large eddy simulation model (LES) using finite element method (FEM) is presented. The Navier-Stokes equations are solved using an implicit procedure. Flow around the Great Belt East bridge suspension span is computed using 2D grid. The computed drag and Strouhal number without implementing law of the wall boundary condition on the wall (case 2) are in good agreement with wind tunnel measurements compared to implementing law of the wall (case 1) boundary condition. Velocity vector plots, vorticity and pressure contour plots for both cases are also compared.
