Abstract

The paper describes the philosophy used in the design of support systems for Dolphin and Boldhead, two underground mines near the southern end of King Island at the western approach to Bass Strait, Australia. In 1991 when a combination of high processing and surface site costs coupled with the low mineral prices led to cessation of operation. Design consideration for the reinforcement of mine driveways and stopes in two mine were based on a quantification of the rock response together with a reinforcement strategy to enhance structural integrity of the roof and side walls. A different type of support systems was used, and tested their effectiveness in the mines. Effectiveness and economic factors were main consideration in the final selection of the support system. Successful roof support was achieved with fully column grouted rock bolts, cable bolts, swellex bolts with systematic timely installation of bolts in proper designed grid pattern.
