Abstract

Experimental contact angles of coals depend on the procedure of measurement. The angles are high on polished and dry surfaces measured with a sessile water drop, smaller on wet and polished surfaces measured with a captive bubble, still smaller on particles attached to bubbles, and very small on coal particles submerged in water and measured by dynamic flotation methods. It was shown that the flotometric hydrophilicity and small hydrophobicity of coal particles most likely result from very low receding water-contact angles of coals. Possible contribution of other factors to the hydrophilicity of coal was also discussed.
