Abstract

The paper discusses problems connected with reclamation of big open pits left after exploitation of lignite. The pits are up to 300 m deep and cover area of up to 2000 ha. Complicated geological, hydro-geological and geotechnical conditions make the reclamation difficult. A series of research studies defined the criteria for the choice of the most profitable ways of reclamation. The paper addresses technical and economic aspects related to closure of lignite mines, as well as utilization and reclamation of pits and other areas disturbed by mining.
