Mining industry reorganisation in Jiu Valley, Romania
Abstract
In the past the Romanian Government was managing the coal industry through the state plans. The last one covers the period of up to year 2010. This plan required that Romania mines enough coal and metals to cover its domestic needs. After 1990 the Government policies have changes. The new Government stresses preservation of mineral resources with the resulting downsizing of the mining industry. Many uncertainties and difficulties are associated with this new program and it is difficult to predict its final outcome. The paper presents reorganization of the mining activities in Romania’s Jiu Valley coal field, with its socio-economics and environmental impacts.
