Abstract

In July 1997, the CSIRO commenced implementation of a triennium plan for coal exploration and mining research. The plan has a total funding of AUDS31 million and is focused on project initiatives in the six broad areas of resource assessment, operations improvement, gas control and utilisation, automation, safety and material characterisation for fines control. The triennium is already more than halfway completed. This paper summarises the achievements so far, the likely outcomes at the end of the triennium and some future research directions.
