Abstract

The Taiyuan formation is the main coal-bearing series in western Shandong and comprises a set of paralic coal-bearing series consisting mainly of clastic rocks with intercalation of marine carbonate rocks, with thickness of 135–180 m, and containing 2–4 mineable coal seams. Pyroclastic rocks exists in this formation, including some typical tonstein. These tonsteins can have industrial uses. In this paper, the origin, geological implications and utilization prospects of the tonsteins in the basal coal seams of the Taiyuan formation will be studied with the methods of mineralogy, petrology and geochemistry.
