Efficiency assessment of a flood protection dyke in the exclusion zone of Chernobyl
Abstract
After the accident to one of the units of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (CNPP) in 1986, the United Nations Organisation launched a vast program of mitigation of the effects of the radioactive fallout that contaminated the territory around the plant. Among these, a feasibility study of a dyke along the Pripyat river was requested since the plain area located near the nuclear power plant presents an extremely high density of radioactive contamination. Therefore, each flood leads to a secondary radioactive contamination of the Pripyat river and the Dniepr reservoir cascade.
