Abstract

In Scotland, spawning Atlantic salmon ( Salmo salar L.) have been historically important for local economies. Regrettably since the 1960s, the number of salmon returning to native rivers has declined due to a variety of factors, both at sea and in some freshwater systems. Installation of hydroelectric dams potentially seriously affects the fish resources of river ecosystems by blocking spawning migration. However, fish passes facilitate this migration and if efficient may ameliorate adverse effects of dams.
