Abstract

The fuzzy approach to hydrological problems is analyzed in order to point out its most relevant and promising fields of application to this discipline. First a brief analysis of the main principles of fuzzy logic is performed. Then fuzzy systems and their functioning procedures are examined, pointing out the main characteristics and the properties that can be useful in approaching hydrological problems. Finally a brief review of some of the most relevant applications to traditional hydrological problems is carried out. It is important to underline that, as this young research field is in continuous and fast evolution, a state-of-the-art review cannot be exhaustive, and can just point out the main trends going on.
