Abstract

A major source of pollution of surface water is caused by uncontrolled overflow from combined sewer systems. The overflows occur during periods of heavy rainfall, where a mixture of rainwater and wastewater runs untreated to the recipient because the storage capacity of the sewer system and the discharge capacity to the wastewater treatment plant is exceeded.
