Abstract

One of the major problems in urban areas is the pollution of atmosphere, soil and water. The rain washes and cleanses the air and the land surface and then, as runoff, transports a variety of materials, such as sediments and heavy metals, to the nearest receiving water body. The pollution load associated with storm runoff can be significantly higher than that from secondary domestic sewage effluent. It can therefore cause degradation of surface and ground water bodies, and can also cause serious problems in drainage systems and traditional treatment facilities.
