Abstract

Italy has the oldest ‘multipurpose’ canal system in Europe. ‘I Navigli di Milano’ (150 km of artificial waterways built between 1150 and 1820), constitute a ‘multipurpose’ powerful system for irrigation, navigation, energy production and fishing. These canals gave life to tiny villages, mills, beautiful villas and factories.
