The use of geosynthetics in hydraulic works
Abstract
The paper deals with the use of geosynthetics in hydraulic works, and particularly in embankment, concrete and masonry dams, rivers, coastal protections, ponds and reservoirs. After an historical introduction, the main types and functions of geosynthetics are briefly outlined. Some design approaches are also presented, specifically for reinforcement and erosion control functions. Different case histories in the various types of hydraulic works are described. Finally, some considerations on the positive environmental impact of geosynthetics on hydraulic structures are emphasized.
