Abstract

The use of geosynthetic clay liners (GCLs) in aquatic environments is growing very rapidly, both for control of seepage in lagoons, canals, river beds and embankments, reed beds and wetlands, and for groundwater protection in landfill and mining applications. GCLs have traditionally been used as a replacement for compacted clay liners in landfill basal lining and capping, and more recently in place of geomembranes in canal and large scale irrigation projects.
