Abstract

Inorganic and organic contaminant spillages, as well as other mechanisms of pollution that have occurred during the spring conflict in 1999, have already affected, and are very likely to continue affecting, surface and ground waters, including strategic water resources in Serbia. High water discharges in most rivers (e.g. the Danube, Sava river etc.), usual for the spring period, have already led to infiltration of various contaminants into aquifers of Belgrade, Pancevo and other towns during the conflict. On the other hand, low discharges during the following summer and autumn months, increased the concentrations of these contaminants in many surface waters.
