Abstract

Lake Mariut, one of the Nile Delta lakes, is located on the Mediterranean coastal area of Egypt, southeast of the highly populated and industrialized Alexandria City. The lake receives the strongest human impact among the Egyptian lakes, as its water body is intensively used for urbanization, reclamation, sewage discharge and highway construction. Such impacts have altered its water quality, and reduced its water body to a surface area of 68 Km2, representing about 50% of its original area measured 35 years ago. The current remaining area of the lake has artificially been divided into four basins, where various types and amounts of Alexandria wastewaters are being discharged. Considerable amounts of ground water enter the lake with unequal flows depending on the variable bedrock features.
