Abstract

In recent years, the ecological integrity of many aquatic systems in Italy has been stressed due to the population growth and associated land use. These stresses are manifested by a broad category of responses that are termed eutrophication, and are mainly associated with excess production of organic matter. Accordingly, a research program has been initiated in order to study the temporal evolution of eutrophication processes affecting the aquatic environments in Italy. The basis of the project consists mainly of a multidisciplinary approach that integrates information among environmental sciences, environmental engineering, ecological modeling and limnology. Such a unique approach helped to develop interactive ecological data, predictive assessment models and information transfer that are exchangeable among scientists and engineers and can be applied to other similar aquatic systems.
