Abstract

During ongoing construction of infrastructure for the extension of Abu Dhabi city at Khalifs Area, significant issues relating to the presence of subsurface problems including cavities and collapse features have been encountered. Construction difficulties have been experienced and the need to undertake extensive, but phased and focused, investigation at the site has become essential. This paper summarises the investigation techniques trialed and undertaken, the results obtained, conclusions and recommendations for further study. Specific comments are made regarding the extensive use of geophysical surveys in assisting with the investigations. In addition the use of a computerized geological database and ground modeling software for maximising storage, usage, interpretation and presentation of geological, geotechnical and environmental data is discussed.
