Abstract

Effect of addition of sulphate to lime treated red earth on the index properties has been studied. Generally, liquid limit and plastic limit increase with increasing sulphate concentration and curing period. The mechanism of these changes have been explained based on the thickness of diffused double layer, changes in structure of clay particles due to alteration of the reaction products of soil-lime reactions. Comparison of liquid limit with free swell index and shrinkage limit helps to understand the role of sulphate in lime treated soils.
