The behaviour of arid climate soils in the Gulf area
Abstract
The properties and behavior of arid climate soil deposits were examined by extensive field and laboratory tests in Kuwait over the past 20 years. These deposits included surface desert sands, cemented sands, and coastal salt bearing soils (Sabkha). For each deposit the basic properties are given first followed by the most important and unique characteristics. The problems associated with volume changes, and leaching of soluble salts upon saturation or wetting are presented and related to the prevailing environmental factors. The response of these soils deposits to foundation loads is assessed based on field loading tests and insitu soil tests.
