Role of some Additives on Spontaneous Heating Characteristics of Indian Coals
Abstract
The paper presents a laboratory study carried out to develop and test suitable additives to inhibit the spontaneous heating characteristics of coal. 3, 5 and 10% aqueous solutions of 11 additives have been applied to three most susceptible coal samples to study their effect on their spontaneous heating characteristics. The experimental investigation indicates that 5% aqueous solution of some of these additives very effectively inhibit the spontaneous heating characteristics of these samples and these are recommended for field application. Since this paper presents the initial part of an ongoing study, which is not complete in all respects, the authors hesitate to misguide the coal mining industry by clearly defining the name of the additive(s) at this stage of the work. Extensive testing and field trials of these additive(s) are underway and the final recommendations with the name of the additive(s) will be published within a short period of time.
