Abstract

Fires in ventilation network in underground coal mines are often caused by air leakage through fractured and crushed side walls, corners and ventilation stoppings. A heap of broken coal formed due to side spalling and roof caving in galleries also leads to fire due to spontaneous heating. Laboratory scale tests have been taken up to study effectiveness of polypropylene (PP) reinforced shotcrete in sealing and supporting the galleries. In the laboratory, PP reinforced concrete beams have been prepared. P and S wave velocities have been measured in the beams to assess development of fracture at elevated temperature.
