Abstract

Whether employed specifically as additives, or brought along by the aggregate or soil of which they form a part, fine elements, artificial as well as natural, play a very important role in several respects: the magnitude of their specific surface provides the essential support to the liquid phase together with which they are present; their mineralogical nature conditions the robustness of the contacts with this phase depending on their affinity with it; their small dimensions play a role in filling that strongly influences the level of compaction of the mixes in which they are used.
