Abstract

Geosynthetics can be used not only for erosion prevention in revetments, but also for the reinforcement of new or old dikes, dams, banks and dunes, and for drainage, filters, impermeable (membrane) cores, and the separation of layers of construction material (see Figure 10.1 ). These applications may often lead to the construction of smaller, less expensive hydraulic structures which will also comply better with the requirements of landscape architects. During floods, the dikes can be successfully protected by numerous immediate actions in which geosynthetics can be used (geotextile tubes, sheets and bags).
