Abstract

Soil erosion and sedimentation are world-wide problems which are associated with negative economic and environmental consequences in many areas, such as agriculture, road and river engineering/infrastructure, storage basins, flooding, safety of water defences, etc. However, due to increased public environmental awareness and rising costs of repairing sites damaged by erosion, erosion and sedimentation control have become serious considerations for all potentially affected projects. Construction sites with unvegetated steep slopes and/or surface drainage ways are prime targets for erosion and large quantities of sediment release. In knowledge of this fact, many national environmental agencies have included erosion and sediment control as an important stipulation in the National Water and Environmental Protection Acts.
