Compaction dynamics of tapped granular matter
Abstract
Granular systems can compact under the impact of sufficiently strong, successive, periodic tapping. Recent experiments have revealed that the (ensemble-averaged) packing fraction obeys a very slow, inverse logarithmic relaxation with time or tap number to a final, dense packing fraction. We provide the corresponding macromechanicaJ relaxational law that is based on simple macromechanical arguments. We also discuss a stochastic extension of this relaxation law mimicking the dynamics of individual compaction processes.
