DEM simulations of uniaxial compression and decompression
Abstract
Numerical simulations of uniaxial compression and decompression of polydisperse systems of elastic and elastoplastic spheres are reported and the results are compared with experimental data obtained from tests on glass ballotini. The results obtained from simulations in which the particles were modelled as elastic spheres exhibited very different unloading behaviour from that provided by the physical experiment; but the stress path followed during loading and unloading was typical of that predicted by cap-type continuum models. By modelling the particles as elastic, perfectly-plastic, qualitative agreement with the experimental data was obtained.
