Abstract

Numerical optimization of compaction processes is possible if using realistic constitutive models for soils. Hypoplasticity represents such a model which can take into account the influence of pressure and density on the behaviour of granular soils. In order to model realistically also the cyclic deformation, a concept of the so-called intergranular strain is introduced. The densification is investigated for a single homogeneous soil element which can be sufficiently defined with single stress and stretching tensors. A numerical study shows the influence of various deformation modes, pressure level and stress amplitude on the rate of densification and on the work input.
