Abstract

Continuous improvement is now a widely accepted part of organisational and industrial initiatives, such as Total Quality Management, Partnering and Benchmarking. Its objective is to focus attention on those aspects of the operation of the organisation that will add value to the customer and to direct the activities of the organisation such that performance is being continuously monitored and improved. The fundamental requirement of this approach is a satisfactory means of measuring performance. If this can be achieved, then the measurements which are taken can be used in a variety of ways: as an organisational focus on those areas of operation requiring improvement; as baseline measures for setting improvement targets; as measures of the improvements achieved; and as objective benchmarks of performance being achieved by the best organisations.
