Abstract

Stand-up time inadequate for the chosen method of construction, and inadequate strength in relation to stress were the two top categories of geological problems identified in a US study of 87 underground projects in rock ( Nelson 1993 ). If we add the third most frequent problem area – unanticipated groundwater inflows, it is clear that correct use of classification methods capable of representing these problems could help designers, contractors and owners in preparing for such problems. Improved pre-investigations are an unavoidable pre-requisite.
