Abstract

Two further aspects have to be considered when cutter life is to be assessed. Johannessen et al. ( NTH 1994 ) have given a graphic description of the types of wear experienced by cutters. Hard abrasive rock has a general tendency to blunt the cutters, with more side abrasion in the less hard rock types. When low resistance to penetration and low abrasion are combined, the cutter slowly loses material from all surfaces. If penetration is particularly easy, more material flows past the sides of the cutter, more heat is generated and self-sharpening occurs. Quartz content in addition to CLI values, therefore has influence, together with porosity.
