Abstract

Tunnel support and rock reinforcement methods that were originally developed for drill-and-blast excavations, such as rock bolts, steel mesh, steel straps (chainlink-mesh) shotcrete (mesh or fibre-reinforced) and steel sets are each used in TBM tunnels. However, their application is usually delayed by the presence of the cutter head and shield. In very poor conditions, bolting and shotcrete may need to be applied ahead of the temporarily withdrawn machine such as illustrated in Figure 52 .
