Abstract

Unfortunately in most TBM projects where stability problems are encountered and large delays occur, the necessity for modified support techniques is discovered after the problem has arisen. The same is true for TBM design changes, such as extended finger shields (length and angular coverage). This situation may arise due to inadequate investigations or due to over-optimistic consultants, owners and contractors who are each pressured by time constraints.
