Abstract

TBM tunnelling can give truly remarkable tunnel advance rates. An extreme 176 m in a 24-hour day has been recorded, while at the other end of the spectrum, machines can be trapped for years while contracts are renegotiated and alternative tunnelling techniques are sought.
