Abstract

An analysis of seven hard rock tunnelling projects in Norway reported by Barton (1996) considered the ratio of available thrust per cutter (F) and uniaxial compression strength (σ c ) as a potential measure of likely ranges of penetration rates. Since there was a range of rock compression strengths for each project, the ratio σ c /F (MPa/tnf) also had a significant range. Net penetration rates also varied within each project.
