Abstract

In previous chapters, it has proved convenient to review penetration rates as a function of cutter thrust (which is a compressive force) and as a function of the uniaxial compression strength of the rock. Although crushing and extremely high stress levels are obviously occurring under the rolling tip of the disc cutter, the formation of radial cracks must presumably be tensile failure, and the formation of chips will require crack propagation and also tensile failure. Some shearing and mixed mode behaviour must also be involved.
