Landslides, walls and tiebacks
Abstract
Walls and tiebacks are being combined to stabilize landslides. These walls, in addition to supporting the soil behind them, must also apply a force on the sliding mass of soil which stabilizes it. Thus, the walls combine the functions described in the preceding chapter with the necessary strength to stabilize a landslide. The wall in Figure 11.1 must be stable when acted upon by the earth in the shaded wedge, but it must also apply a large enough force to stabilize the mass of soil above the landslide surface.
