Abstract

Subsidence is an unwanted phenomenon. It may cause damage to surface structures. Subsidence control measures may be taken in stages; (i) prediction, (ii) prevention and (iii) protection. The effectiveness of preventive and protective measures depends greatly on the accuracy of the prediction. The civil and mining engineers should join forces to reduce damage to buildings which are worth of billion dollars all over the world, particularly in the over-populated regions.
