Abstract
Joint is the general term for any mechanical discontinuity in a rock mass, along which the tensile strength is zero or negligible. It is also the general term for most type of discontinuities, bedding planes, weak schistocity planes, zones of weaknesses, shear zones and faults for engineering purposes.
