Abstract

Oman is situated in the southeastern part of the Arabian Peninsula. Due to its location in the Arid and Semi-Arid region, the water resources are limited. Special attention was given to establish an up to date hydrometric monitoring network across the entire country. This paper has reviewed the current status and compared the distribution and density of the network with WMO standards. The overall density of rainfall, wadi and aflaj stations meet WMO standards in coastal and plain areas. Attention should be given to the less developed desert regions. The groundwater monitoring shows a good distribution across the entire country, averaging 38 Km 2 / well in the non-desert areas. Although the regional distribution of the hydrometric network shows a good coverage, the larger scale density i.e. catchment scale may not be.
