Integrated solution to flash floods problems in wadi Watier, South Sinai, A.R.E
Abstract
Proper hydrology evaluation is essential for flood protection to guarantee the public safety of the surrounding environment. Infrastructure of wadi Watier such as the international road Nuweibaa/Ras El-Naqab with length of 70 km, the crossing with the international road Dahab/Taba with length of 200 m, Nuweibaa City, and several tourist villages are seasonally subjected to distortion at the main stream and at the delta, Figure 1 . The onrush of the surface runoff can be minimized at the intersections, with the international roads, by means of detention and storage works and at Nuweibaa City by means of dikes, dissipation works, and Irish crossings. The main problem is the ruin of these infrastructures with flooded water several times per year and the lost of tenths millions of cubic meters from water flowing to the Gulf of Aqaba. These ruins resulted in death of passengers and damage several trucks and autos. Consequently, maintenance of this road costs several millions Egyptian pounds every year. The main purposes of this research are to minimize the harmful distortion effects from flash floods on the international roads sharply and to maximize the use of runoff water to achieve protectorate surrounding environmental of the area. Other benefits can be achieved such as store some volumes of million cubic meters of direct water for seasonal agriculture sufficient to irrigate about 4500 feddans/year. Moreover, reuse of recharging water for groundwater aquifers, as indirect contribution, can cover the requirements of about 3000 feddans/year. Another positive impact is the creation of a good agriculture-land upstream the proposed structures amount to about 500 feddans. Results showed that, with a proper hydrological analysis, a number of positive impacts could be achieved. Furthermore, costs of structures can be compensated within few years after executions of the proposed control works.
